Planetek Italia S.r.l. - Benefit Company is a multidisciplinary Geographical Information Services (GIS) and Earth Observation consultancy company, which focus’s on information land management.

A challenging activity that Planetek Italia started and developed, starting from the Tecnopolis technological park in Valenzano, Bari (Italy), thanks to the business venture of its four founders Giovanni Sylos Labini, Mariella Pappalepore, Sergio Samarelli and Vincenzo Barbieri.

The History

Planetek Italia was founded in 1994 when four young entrepreneurs started its business venture and based their activities in the technological Park of Tecnopolis in Valenzano, Bari (Italy). Giovanni Sylos Labini, Mariella Pappalepore, Sergio Samarelli and Vincenzo Barbieri had the idea of starting providing products and services for geomatic and space sector, and still this is the goal of the company.

The Tecnopolis technological park was a good place to start, as the park was organized to give support to start-up companies and allowed Planetek to cooperate with professionals working in the GIS and Remote Sensing Lab of the Park.

• After a few months the first reselling contract was signed to distribute the ER Mapper software suite in Italy. This helped the company to become one of the market leaders in the national market of Earth Observation solutions.
• At the end of 1994 the company is an Italian ESRI Business Partner for ArcInfo.
• Over the years the company has grown thanks to the acquisition of important work orders.
• In 1996 we started cooperating with the European Space Agency (ESA).
• In 1998 we started integrating of GPS data for the development of solutions aimed at Public Transportation Fleet monitoring.
• In 1998 the company obtained the ISO 9001 certification and then step-up to vision 2000.
• In 1999 we joined as a member the Italian Remote Sensing Association (AIT), in which Mariella Pappalepore had a role in the steering committee.
• The continuous grow of the company lead us to find a new headquarter. In 1999, a 1.000 sqm building was bought that is the current headquarter.
• In 1999 Ikonos, the first VHR satellite, was launched and Planetek Italia signed the agreement with EUSI for the distribution of imagery in Italy.
• In 1999 Planetek Italia was a promoter and founder of AIPAS, the Italian SMEs Aerospace Association, and Giovanni Sylos Labini became its Chairman.
• In 2000 we developed the first WebGIS called "Atlante Italiano" for the Italian Ministry of the Environment, based on the ER Mappers’ ECW compression format. In 2002, we developed and launched Cart@net, Planetek’s commercial web application.
• In 2001 the first project involving the SAR data processing for ERS sensor and in 2004 had the important role of leading the main program in the field of landslide large scale monitoring funded by ESA and based on interferometry.
• In 2002 we launched a free on-line course of Remote Sensing, a reference point for thousands of users.
• From 2003 Planetek Italia is a member of Confindustria.
• In 2005 Planetek founded two spin-off companies. GEO-K, a spin-off company of Tor Vergata University, which is involved in radar data processing. In 2006 GAP srl, a spin-off company of Politecnico di Bari which focuses techniques applied to Radar data Persistent Scatterer.
• In 2005 based in Athens, Greece, was founded Planetek Hellas.
• In 2006 the company became a member of Costellazione Apulia and shared with other 60 Apulian companies the goal of transforming into a benefit company. The first step towards sustainability was to adopt in 2008 an environment management system compliant to the UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 and a higher involvement in 2009 with the Directive CE n.761/2001 (EMAS) certification.
• In 2009 the company obtained the SA8000 certification, entering the “club” of the companies compliant to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).
• In 2008 Planetek Italia takes new challeges as a reseller in Italy of ERDAS solutions and of Digital Globe’s satellite WorldView-2 and Infoterra’s satellite TerraSAR-X.
• In 2009 Planetek Italia is one of the founders of Apulian Aerospace District.
• In 2010 becomes a member of OGC, the Open Geospatial Consortium, with the goal of promoting the culture of data sharing (until year 2016).
• In 2011 Mariella Pappalepore was elected Chair of ICT Directorate of Confindustria Bari-BAT (yrs 2011 to 2014)
• In 2011 Planetek has been awarded the development of the European INSPIRE Geoportal, the central portal for environmental information in the European Union and the discovery and view of EU member states enviromental data.
• In 2012 the Planetek2020 strategy starts. Four Strategic Business Units were created: SpaceStream, European Institutions, Government & Security, Business 2 Business.
• In 2012 we are authorized distributors for the Italian territory of the integrated Hexagon Geospatial | Intergraph Portfolio (suite ERDAS and GeoMedia).
• In 2012 Planetek internationalization strategy becomes concrete in Europe and North Africa. The Company was awarded two important contracts for the Spatial Data Infrastructure of Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries, and for the soil sealing monitoring and mapping in Europe for the E.E.A. (GMES Initial Operations HR Landcover).
• In 2013 we joined the Solar Wind Analyser investigation team for the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter mission (ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 Programme).

• In 2014 Planetek Hellas fully entered in the European market as a coordinator of important international projects
• In 2015 Planetek Italia has been awarded the prize Premio Industria Felix as best Apulian company in aerospace sector
• In 2015 Mariella Pappalepore was elected vice President for Economy of the territory of Confindustria Bari-BAT.
• In 2016 Planetek Italia is listed top 100 in SME Welfare Index Report 2016
• In 2016 our Rheticus® service Rheticus® Displacement received awards at national and European level:
  • Best Application 2016 by OpenGeoData Italia association
  • Awarded the TIM Telecom's Best Practices for Innovation Award by Confindustria Salerno, Italy
  • Finalist of the "European EO Product of the Year" award promoted by EARSC
  • Finalist at the International IGNITE Competition of Hexagon Geospatial
• In 2016 Planetek Italia is among the 5 finalists of the EARSC Company award

• In 2019 the Italian hyperspectral satellite Prisma, was launched, Planetek contributed to its development
• In 2019 the European Environment Agency awarded the consortium lead by Planetek Italia the first VHR Coastal Hotspot Mapping of European coastal zones
• In 2019 Rheticus® was awarded the first prize at World Smart City Congress 2019 category "Urban Environment"
• In 2020 was launched the Solar Orbiter mission, to which Planetek contributed
• In 2020 We have been awarded the Welfare Champion 2020 award by the Welfare Index PMI
• In 2021 Planetek Italia becomes a Benefit Company
• In 2021 Planetek Italia is again listed among the 105 Italian Welfare Champion SMEs
• In 2021 AI-eXpress our satellitare as-a-service platform is part of ESA Phi-lab InCubed programme, and we launch SPACEDGE®
• In 2021 Rheticus® is a tool used in ESA and Asian Development Bank's sustainable development programmes
• In 2021 we launched EO-Learning, the free online training platform on Earth observation and remote sensing
• In 2022 Planetek becomes a member of the Copernicus Academy
• In 2022 we are among 22 signatories of the "Statement for a Responsible Space Sector" promoted by ESA
• In 2022 Planetek Italia was awarded again as Welfare Champion and gained the third place in the Industry sector.
• In 2023 ESA awards Planetek several contracts for the development of the new Italian constellation IRIDE.
• In 2023 was awarded as the Italian Sustainability Hero by SME EnterPRIZE.
• In 2024 Planetek Italia celebrates its 30-year long history in business
• In 2024 Planetek Italia is listed among the best companies of Southern Italy
