ESA’s first space weather nanosatellite mission will be designed, built and operated by Hemeria. The Mission Operations Centre, delivering the processed space weather data to ESA, is sub-contracted to Planetek Italia.
Planetek is proud to announce its role in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) first space weather nanosatellite mission, Swing. Under a €9.8 million contract awarded to Hemeria by ESA, Planetek will develop and operate the Mission Operations Center to deliver critical space weather data to ESA.
The Swing mission, a nanosatellite designed to monitor the ionosphere—a crucial atmospheric layer affecting communication and navigation systems—represents the first demonstration of using SWx satellite and data as a service. Moreover, it will be based on a nanosatellite in LEO – SSO orbit, providing measures derived from cost-effective payloads.
A significant leap forward in space weather monitoring, paving the way for a future commercial constellation providing space environment measurements as a service.
"Planetek Italia is thrilled to contribute to the European Space Agency’s first Nanosat Space Weather mission. It is also a great opportunity to contribute to this landmark mission supporting a leading company like Hemeria with our expertise and software solutions”, says Giovanni Sylos Labini, CEO of Planetek Italia.
The Mission Operations Centre developed by Planetek will process and distribute space weather data, ensuring real-time access to actionable insights for ESA and its stakeholders.
Planetek has sound experience in the design and implementation of software for ground and space systems of Earth Observation and Cosmic exploration missions. Its capabilities range from system definition, the design and development, to validation and on-site delivery.
In more than 20 years of experience, we contributed to the definition and implementation of software for space missions, such as COSMO-SkyMed, COSMO Second Generation, PRISMA, TRUTHS, Solar Orbiter, µHETsat (or MicroHETsat), Chime, PLATiNO, AIX.
This collaboration underscores Planetek’s dedication to pioneering innovative Earth observation solutions and sustainable space initiatives, furthering its mission to protect the Earth and enhance quality of life through cutting-edge geospatial technologies.
Planetek Italia is one of the first signatories of ESA's Zero Debris Charter and the Statement for a Responsible Space Sector.
